How does that work?

This depends on what your current situation is. Let's take a common situation as an example, namely:

• a house with 2 floors
• underfloor heating on the ground floor
• radiators on the upper floor
• boiler as a heat source

In your current situation, the room thermostat ensures that the room in which it is present (usually the living room) is kept at a certain temperature. If the temperature drops below this, it controls the central heating boiler and provides heat. 

The moment the ground floor for "heat demand", the radiators on the upper floor may also give off heat and only at that time. 
If the ground floor does not ask for heat, the central heating boiler will not switch on and you can open a radiator, but nothing will happen.

If you take a multizone thermostat, the big difference is that the radiator controls are linked to the thermostat and can therefore also provide "heat demand".

In addition, it is important that the rooms that do not require heat at that time are closed. In this example, a valve will be placed near the underfloor heating so that it will close as soon as it is warm enough and the heat only goes to the rooms that require it.

When  do you apply a multizone system?
